Pillow Talk: An Interview With The Pillow Bar’s Peggy McCormick

peggy-with-pillowsWe were thrilled to welcome Peggy McCormick of The Pillow Bar, the country’s leading maker of customized down-only pillows, to the store for a special Lunch & Learn on March 27. We took a few minutes to ask her some of our burning questions about (what else?) sleep:

What are the most common sleep disturbances people suffer from?

Most of the time it’s that they can’t get comfortable because they are sleeping on the wrong pillow. Also, many people—especially women—get too hot.

How do you customize your pillows to eliminate sleep problems?

We customize pillows to the way people sleep, and also to their frame size (which refers to the width of their shoulders, not their weight). We offer fills in soft, medium, and firm. If you’re a front sleeper, you need a soft pillow. If you’re a back sleeper, you need a medium pillow, with not too much lift. In an ideal world, everyone would be a back sleeper; it’s the most natural position for spinal alignment and arm positioning.

Which kind of pillow is most popular?

Our side sleeper pillow is our biggest seller—80 percent of Americans sleep on their side.

Pillow Bar pillows are filled with only clean, high-quality European down. What’s so special about down?

It’s a very giving medium; it goes with your body. It’s also all-natural—it contains no formaldehyde or allergens like you’ll find in synthetic fillers. Often when people hear “down” they think of goose feathers, but down actually comes from the front of the goose, not the feathers.

Any tips for creating a restful sleep space?

Keep your bedroom cool. Try to sleep in fabrics that breathe, like cotton (that includes both bed linens and pajamas). Keep the environment calm—no TV or electronics right before bed.

You’re Invited: Join Us For A “Lunch & Learn” With The Pillow Bar on March 27!

Pillow-Bar-Lunch-and-Learn-v2Come learn about sleep habits, the benefits of down, and The Pillow Bar’s unique process of creating customized down pillows

Want to learn how you can get better sleep? Join us at Bedfellows (1495 Market St) on Thursday, March 27 from 11 am to 2 pm for a “Lunch & Learn” with Peggy McCormick of The Pillow Bar, the nationally-recognized maker of custom-made down pillows. McCormick will talk about creating healthy sleep habits, the benefits of sleeping on high-quality down, and the unique Pillow Bar process of making down-only pillows personalized according to sleep style, frame size, and age. Drinks and light snacks will be served. The event is free and open to the public.

The Pillow Bar concept is that a pillow should be custom-designed with a fill that is soft enough yet supportive enough to allow the head to fall naturally in line with the spine. Pillows are filled with clean, fine, white European down and come in “soft,” “medium,” or “firm”; each pillow is then covered in all-natural cotton. Custom embroidery is offered at no extra charge. Each pillow protector includes a French lavender sachet, providing an aromatic “sleep trigger” which promotes healthy sleep habits. Customers can place orders at Bedfellows and the personalized pillows ship within 48 hours. On March 27, Bedfellows will offer a one-day-only special on Pillow Bar pillows: buy one pillow for 10% off, two for 20% off, or 3 for 30% off. In addition, all pajamas will be 50% off.

Based in Dallas, TX, The Pillow Bar was founded by Merrimac Dillon after a years-long search for “the perfect pillow.” The company has since gained national recognition as the country’s leading manufacturer of luxury pillows, garnering such devotees as Whoopi Goldberg and Marie Claire magazine’s Nina Garcia. The Pillow Bar has been featured in numerous publications and TV shows, including The Wall Street Journal, The View, NBC Today, and Fox News.

Check back for updates about the event here on the blog as well as on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram!

Update: Enter our Pillow Bar Instagram Contest for a chance to win a Pillow Bar Bon Voyage Travel Bag stuffed with a Jetsetter Mini travel pillow and a hand-woven pashmina (worth $150!). To enter, follow bedfellowstallahassee on Instagram and “like” the contest photo! Good luck!

Why Use Linen Wash?

Le Blanc linen washWe recommend laundering fine linen in cold water with a gentle yet effective linen wash, like Le Blanc. Why? Ordinary laundry detergents contain harsh ingredients that can make fabrics pill or fade. A few tips for laundering fine linen:

– Always dilute your linen wash in the water before adding your linen. Never apply soap or detergent directly to dry linen, even when spot treating.

– Don’t overload the washing machine.

– Dry on a low temperature setting. Expect natural fibers (such as Egyptian cotton) to shrink about 3-5%.

– Remove linen from the dryer promptly (preferably while still slightly damp). Smooth and fold, or steam iron on the hot/warm setting on the reverse side of the fabric.

– Give your washing machine and iron a monthly vinegar bath to keep them clean and working properly.

– Before going to bed, remove makeup or skin care products with oxidizing agents, which can discolor the fabric. If you wear these products while sleeping, we recommend using white pillowcases (towels, too).

Interview With A Designer: Meet Cinda B

10074750095_0647c27569_oOn Thursday, October 3, we were thrilled to host Cinda Boomershine, Atlanta-based founder and designer of the cinda b line of handbags, travel bags, totes, and accessories, for the special shopping event “brunch & bags with cinda b.” Cinda spent the day greeting shoppers as they browsed the collection, entered to win giveaways, and enjoyed mimosas and a light brunch. She also took a few minutes to speak with us about this fall’s trends, her advice to aspiring fashion designers, how she balances work and motherhood, and—of course—what’s in her cinda b handbag.

What trends are you seeing this fall in women’s clothing and accessories?
Bold colors. We do a lot of trend forecasting when we design our patterns, and all of the colors in our new pattern, Amore, are on-trend for this fall. We’re seeing a lot of rich red, deep burgundy, purple, orange, and mustard.

Tell us about the process of making a cinda b product.
We start with designing patterns. I get a lot of inspiration from travel, and from vintage design books. Our styles are also based on trend analysis and what customers tell us they want. We start with a paper design, then it goes into our computers, then we sample it, and finally it goes into production.

Any advice for aspiring fashion designers?
Chase your dreams! Go for it! If I can do it, you can do it, I always say. Beyond that, write a business plan and do your research.

You’re also mom to 16-month-old Belle. How do you balance work and motherhood?
I have an amazing husband [artist Mark Boomershine], we have a great family, and she goes to preschool at the church, and all of that helps. She hangs out in my office when she needs to, and throws things. Actually, I’d love to blame the mess in my office on her, but I really can’t!

What’s in your cinda b handbag?
My cinda b continental zip wallet, my phone (with cinda b case!), hand sanitizer, Altoids, and lip gloss.

New Bedding for Anna Grace’s Room

We all know that a promise is a promise and no matter how busy life gets, we certainly keep our promises to our children. Gina is no different, and she promised her daughter Anna Grace that her bedroom would be painted by the time school started – and Gina delivered the goods!

Creating a perfectly restful environment, these cool colors are right on trend and so right for a good night’s sleep!  Now the freshly painted room is just waiting for the new Pine Cone Hill bedding and we need your help to make the perfect selection for AG.

One of our favorite and most versatile lines is Mariposa.  The company began in 1984 after founder Livia Cowan returned from a road trip through Mexico with a truckload of recycled glassware made from old Coke bottles. Livia set up shop in her parent’s garage and Mariposa was born.  Nearly three decades later, the truck and the garage headquarters are gone but the small family-feel of the company remains. Mariposa is currently housed in a renovated, yellow 19th century livery stable called, “The Barn” in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts.

  • Mariposa products are all handmade. No two pieces are ever exactly alike.
  • Mariposa is committed to ecological responsibility. The majority of our products are made from 100% recycled materials.
  • Mariposa Artist in Residence, Shelly Bradbury, has won international praise as an extraordinary sculptor.
  • Michael Updike, son of famous American author, John Updike, is the artist and master sculptor behind the Mariposa signature Brillante collection. Renowned for his elegance and bright whimsy, Updike has done the impossible at Mariposa for decades: turning 100% recycled aluminum into tomorrow’s supplest tableware, inspired by both nature and tradition.
  • Mariposa is one of the strongest brands in the wedding category. (Attendant Gifts)  Traditional brides are drawn to the timeless beauty of String of Pearls, part of the Updike’s Brillante collection. String of Pearls pieces make the perfect wedding gift and are often engraved with the couple’s monogram. More modern brides may favor Bradbury’s Sueño collection.
  • Need the perfect gift for any occasion? Customers continue to turn to Mariposa for unique and innovative hostess, birthday and holiday gifts.
  • Mariposa products come in the signature teal gift boxes and larger pieces include soft, protective flannel sleeves for storage.
  • Mariposa products are not only beautiful, but also easy to care for—they won’t tarnish and can be cleaned with soap and water. As with most metal, items are not dishwasher or microwave-safe.

New for Fall + Winter ’13, we began with a beautiful balance of a rich red complemented by a deep burgundy, reminiscent of a heart-healthy glass of Pinot Noir. When those colors came together with a distinct pattern embracing all of the colors of a morning sunrise — a new day — Amore (which means “love” in Italian) was born.
