Show Me Some Sheets

daydream_bed_matoukThread count, cotton quality, percale or sateen…choosing new sheets can be a bewildering task! Here are our tips for finding the perfect sheets for you:

Thread Count

Thread count is the number of threads woven into each square inch of fabric. Many shoppers mistakenly believe that a high thread count is the only indicator of quality in a set of sheets, but a high thread count does not guarantee high-quality fiber. We recommend choosing a sheet based on what feels best to you. Our sheets are at least a 200-thread count to ensure quality construction, but don’t base your purchase decision on thread count alone.

Fiber Type

Egyptian cotton, with its smooth, glossy finish, is considered to be the highest-quality fiber available.

Construction Quality

The more stitches used per inch, the more durable the sheet will be (high thread count does not guarantee high-quality stitching!). All of our sheets are produced using the highest-quality sources available. Fitted sheets should have deep pockets for a good fit on larger beds.

Your Sleep Habits

Think about the way you sleep. If you get hot when you sleep, look for a percale cotton, which has a cool, crisp feel (also make sure your mattress pad is 100% cotton, as anything with synthetic fibers will keep you warmer). If you get cold at night, look for a cotton sateen, which has a soft, cozy feel.

Color and Pattern

Look for yarn-dyed fabrics, which are softer and ensure longer-lasting color. Patterns can be beautiful and express your personal style, whereas solids offer a classic look that can be changed up with pillows and throw blankets. Monogramming is also a great way personalize your sheets.

The best pillows are customized to your sleep style, with a fill that is soft enough yet supportive enough to allow your head to fall naturally in line with your spine. For more on how pillows affect sleep, see our interview with Peggy McCormick of The Pillow Bar.
